Today I looked at Design in a nutshell: Six major creative movements on brainpickings.org

 The article written by popova omes features a  six-part series animated primers on six major design movements:

1. Gothic Revival

2. Arts & Crafts movement 

3. Bauhaus

4. Modernism

5. American industrial design

6. Post modernism

I found each video very insightful as although I had heard of each design movement beforehand, I never actually knew or understood them. However now I do. 

It was the 'Modernism' movement that I found the most intriguing as after the war had ended there were many changes to many different industries to help people move on from the history.

Hegarty on Creativity: There are No Rules

John Hegarty's book on creativity is a witty, insightful and easy to read guide on how to master the creative world. By reading 'There are no rules' it has helped me to develop a different mind-set on creativity, and has been some what inspirational.

My Key Learnings:

• The Blank page is one of the greatest challenges faced by the creative person.
• Confidence is a key to success.
• Enjoy your work.
• Great ideas can come to you when your not thinking.
• Do not describe your work as 'original' think of it as being 'fresh'.
• Be fearless.
• Simplicity in the ultimate goal. 
• Stop thinking, start feeling- "what the heart knows today, the head will understand tomorrow"-pg 33.
• storytelling is the most powerful form of communication ever invented.
• Don't be a cynic
• Creativity is the expression of self.
• Remove the headphones.
• Surround yourself with the best people.
• Good is the enemy of Great.
• Focus.
• practice makes perfect.
• spotting the right idea is as important as having it.
• Timing is everything.
• Beware of fashion.
• Routine stunts creativity.
• Think short term not long term.
• HAVE FUN!

Here are two quotes that have stuck in my mind:

MY FCP REFLECTION. STOP. START & CONTINUE

As the first semester is complete. I am going to take this opportunity to reflect on my strengths and weaknesses and my personal approaches to the course; and what I think I should stop doing, activities I should start doing and what I should continue with doing.

STOP

Worrying that the work is not creative. Putting off reading or work that may be the most challenging and my weaknesses such as essay writing and leaving it until last. And wasting opportunities to write blog posts, take photographs, read and research.

START

Believing in myself a little more and expand on my strengths. Create a weekly timetable and diary for myself for the tasks I am going to set myself each week. to enable myself to keep up to date and on target. Get into the habit of reading and Blogging! Be experimental and expand on seminar tasks we are given (above and beyond, and don't be afraid of creativity).

CONTINUE

Enjoy the course, have fun and keep engaged. Continue to do extra visual work as that is what I enjoy the most. Keeping up to date with the latest news ans trends within all industries of the fashion world. Continue to look into artists, photographers, designers to gain inspiration for my work.

'Killer Heels' Exhibition Brooklyn Museum

Today I visited Brooklyn Museum to see the 'Killer Heels' exhibition. I loved it!

The Killer Heels exhibition explores fashion’s most provocative accessory. "From the high platform chopines of sixteenth-century Italy to the glamorous stilettos on today’s runways and red carpets, the exhibition looks at the high-heeled shoe’s rich and varied history and its enduring place in our popular imagination".
